Throughout 1938 and 1939 Lady Reading, the dynamic founder chairman, spoke at 98 public meetings and travelled over 1,200 miles every month, to recruit women to the WVS. By the end of 1939, four months after the outbreak of war, she had recruited 300,000 women.
